Symphony Tonight ! Let the music move you as soloists take the stage in operetic song. The concert will include Stravinsky's "Petrouchka" and Harbison's "Remembering Gatsby," as well as some arias that will inspire and move you.

Just wondering -- would you purchase a used car from this nice gentleman? Well, at the very least, I wouldn't play poker with him. Rest assured, though, Maestro D.D. Gier can motivate 100 talented musicans to perform as if they numbered 300 but play as 1 !

Two-time Grammy Award-nominated Allyson has recorded a series of nine CDs, each of which showcases her astonishing breadth of repertoire. From Gershwin and Porter to Brazilian bossa nova to samba and Theolnious Monk. Now, the vocalist has sharpened her focus, taking on in turn French and Brazilian music, the genius of John Coltrane, and the blues. Karrin Allyson plays the major jazz festivals and clubs of the U.S. and makes repeated tours overseas. Allyson has appeared at Carnegie Hall as part of a special tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. When one listens to Allyson, one hears heart, intelligence, and musical sophistication.

Photography Exhibit
Light on the Firmament - Works by Akitaka Samiura

Location: Horse Barn Arts Center - Falls Park
Japanese artist Akitaka Sumiura received his fine arts degree at Montana State University. He brings his unique photographic prints to the Loft Gallery to share his images of fields and landscapes with which those of us living on the prairie are familiar. As Akitaka explains, "The palette of color in the sky here is so colorful, not hazy as in Japan." Come to the Barn to experience this exhibit that was two years in the making.

The Augustana Choir presents Mozart's Requiem
Time: 3:00pm CDT
Location: Sioux Falls, SD
Augustana Choir The year 2006 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. On Palm Sunday, The Augustana Choir and the adult choirs of First Lutheran Church and Our Savior's Lutheran Church join the SD Symphony Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Mozart's Requiem under the direction of Dr. James Johnson.

Sunday, April 9, at 3:00 pm at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. The performance is FREE and open to the public, with a free-will offering being taken to help with costs of The Augustana Choir's mission trip to Tanzania in May and June of this year.

This will be a spectacular performance!

Book Reading: In the Shadow of Wounded Knee

Book Reading Author Roger L. Di Silvestro will present In the Shadow of Wounded Knee, The Untold Story of the Indian Wars at the Old Courthouse Museum on Tuesday, April 11 at 7 p.m.

In December of 1890 the formal hostilities of the Indian Wars were concluded with the slaughter of 150 Sioux Braves at Wounded Knee. Yet violence continued as young Native Americans sought revenge, and settlers continued the harassment the cavalry had abandoned. The year 1891 saw two court cases that riveted the nation. One involved the killing of Lieutenant Edward Casey by the 21 year-old brave, Plenty Horses. The other concerned the killing of peaceful Native Americans by the rancher Peter Culbertson and his brothers.

If so, the Pettigrew Home & Museum is hosting an Archival Preservation Program on Saturday, April 22nd at 1 p.m. The program will focus on proper storage techniques and handling procedures to use when dealing with paper documents.

Mark O'Connor Appalachia Waltz Trio

Mark O'Connor Trio In 1992, Mark O’Connor was the most successful fiddler in country music. Somewhere his journey took a turn back towards the early influences of Texas fiddle and French jazz violin. He has combined these two extreme musical genres with his vast knowledge of other musical styles and has shaped them into a new American classical music, bringing to his array of musical compositions a melding of jazz, classical, bluegrass, blues and the American Songbook.

His collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer produced the original and highly acclaimed Appalachia Waltz, causing many critics to tap O’Connor as a leading proponent of the new American musical idiom. The follow up, Appalachian Journey, received a Grammy Award in 2001. His Great Hall debut will feature music from both recordings as well...[more details]
